Create a QR code for your loyalty card – explained simply
Every week without a QR code you lose regular customers you could have kept – yet setup takes just 5 minutes.
The QR code for your loyalty card is the moment when an idea becomes a working rewards program. Customers scan it, tap once, and have the card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. This post explains what the code contains, how it's created, where it should go, and which mistakes slow down the start.
What the QR code does
The QR code is a link. It points to a page where the loyalty card moves into the wallet with one tap. Here's how it works for the customer:
- Open the camera app, hold it over the code.
- Tap the link that appears at the top.
- Tap "Add to Apple Wallet" or "Add to Google Wallet" on the page.
- Done, the card is in the wallet.
That takes 10 seconds. The code is the same for all customers, it contains no personal data. The page automatically detects whether an iPhone or Android is scanning and shows the right wallet. What a wallet pass is technically is explained under What is a wallet pass.
Important: The QR code on the display stand is for adding the card. The stamping happens after – your team scans the card in the customer's wallet with their own phone. Two different codes, two different moments.
How the QR code is created
Option 1: Generator plus your own tech. You could create a QR code with a generator that points to a page. Problem: the page has to create a real wallet pass, with certificates from Apple and a Google Wallet account. That's technically complex and not doable for a single shop.
Option 2: Provider with ready-made display stand. With stampa, the QR code is created automatically as soon as you set up your card. The AI creates a print-ready display stand in your branding – with logo, colors, and the QR code in the right place. You print the PDF, done. How onboarding works is explained under Digital loyalty card: how it works.
The second option takes minutes and delivers a code backed by a working card.
Where the display stand should go
The best QR code is useless if nobody sees it. These locations work:
| Location | Why | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Right at the checkout | Customer waits while paying | At eye level |
| At the counter next to the coffee machine | Wait time while order is being made | Not behind milk jugs |
| On the table as a table display | Guests are sitting and have time | On every table |
| On the door from inside | Last glance on the way out | Only as a supplement |
| On the receipt | Customer takes it with them | Often overlooked |
The most important place is the checkout. Here your team can mention the code: "Want our loyalty card? Just scan it." This one sentence makes the difference between a display stand that gets ignored and one that brings customers. More on this under QR code display stand at checkout.
Do the self-test: will your QR code work?
- Is the display stand at eye level at the checkout?
- Is the code at least 5 cm large?
- Is the reward (e.g. "10 stamps, 1 free coffee") visible on the display stand?
- Does your team know how to mention the code?
- Have you scanned and tested the code yourself?
If you have three "yes" answers, it's working. If not, you know where to improve.
Size, contrast, and printing
A QR code only works if the camera recognizes it cleanly. These points matter:
- Size. At least 3 x 3 cm for scans from 30 cm away. At the checkout better 5 to 8 cm so it works from half a meter away too.
- Contrast. Dark code on light background. No code on photos, no light code on light background.
- Quiet zone. Free space around the code. No text, no logo right at the edge.
- Surface. Print matte. Glossy paper reflects ceiling light and interferes with the camera.
- No distortion. The code must stay square. When scaling, lock the aspect ratio.
A common mistake: putting the logo in the middle of the code. It looks good but only works with high error correction. When in doubt, leave the code clear and put the logo next to it.
The display stand created by stampa handles this automatically. If you customize the design yourself, test the code before printing with several phones from different distances.
Mistakes that slow down the start
From practice, the most common reasons why a QR code is there but brings few cards:
- Nobody mentions it. The display stand is there, the team says nothing. One sentence at checkout doubles sign-ups.
- The code is too small or too far away. Behind the checkout on the wall is unreachable for customers.
- The reward is missing from the display stand. "Scan for the loyalty card" is no reason, "10 stamps, 1 free coffee" is one.
- The code points to an old card. If you create a new card, check the display stand. With stampa the code stays stable if you only change design or reward.
- The team doesn't know how stamping works. The customer has the card, the employee hesitates. Training takes under 15 minutes and should happen before the first customer day.
What happens if you don't change anything
Without a QR code your rewards program doesn't run. Customers can't get the card, you can't stamp, you lose regular customers to shops that make it easier. Every week without a QR code is a week customers go somewhere else – without you noticing.
With stampa you have the QR code in 5 minutes, free up to 100 active customers, no credit card needed. No risk, no effort.
The first test before the first customer
Before the display stand goes to the checkout, walk through it yourself: scan the code with your phone, add the card, have an employee give you a stamp, check in the dashboard that the stamp arrived. If that works, it works with customers too. With stampa this test is part of onboarding, including your own test card.
Conclusion
The QR code for your loyalty card is a link to a page that puts the card in the wallet. You don't have to create it yourself: with stampa it's created automatically with a print-ready display stand in your branding. What matters is location, size, contrast, and a team that mentions the code at checkout.
