Plan seasonal promotions: annual calendar for small shops
Every week without a promotion plan, regular customers go to the competition – because they give them a reason to come now.
Seasonal promotions give your customers a reason to come right now – not sometime. The trick is planning: whoever knows in January what they'll do in October won't be stressed in October. This annual calendar provides an occasion, a promotion idea, and a note on which shops it suits for every month.
Why seasonal promotions work
An occasion takes the decision away from the customer. "Stop by sometime" is a request. "Valentine's Day: two desserts for the price of one" is a plan. Occasions create anticipation. They're easy to pass along. And they give you a natural reason to send a message to the lock screen.
For small shops there's an added advantage: big chains plan promotions months in advance. You can decide on Monday and start on Friday.
The annual calendar for small shops
| Month | Occasion | Promotion idea | Fits for |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | January slump, New Year's resolutions | Double stamps through end of January | all |
| February | Valentine's Day (Feb 14) | 2 for 1 on dessert or drink, couple's appointment | Restaurants, cosmetics, florists |
| March | Spring start, Easter (March/April) | Spring special, Easter stamp card with extra | Bakery, café, florists, boutique |
| April | Easter, ice cream and outdoor dining season start | First visit of the season brings bonus stamps | Ice cream shop, beer garden, car wash |
| May | Mother's Day (2nd Sunday) | Pre-order promotion, gift set, appointment for mom and child | Florists, bakery, cosmetics, barber |
| June | Summer start, school holidays begin | Summer card, iced coffee special | Café, bar, ice cream shop |
| July | Summer holidays, heat | Heat flash promotion on hot days | Ice cream shop, juice bar, café |
| August | School start, holiday returnees | Welcome-back stamps, back-to-school offer for families | all |
| September | Oktoberfest, fall start | Oktoberfest special, pumpkin season | Restaurants, bakery |
| October | Halloween (Oct 31) | Special product, card in Halloween design, kids' extra | Café, bakery, ice cream shop, kiosk |
| November | St. Martin, Black Friday, Advent start | Instead of discount battle: loyalty weekend with triple stamps | Retail, boutique |
| December | Advent, Christmas, New Year's Eve | Advent extra every week, gift card promotion, New Year's Eve reservation | all |
Add occasions with changing dates like Ramadan and Eid. Or local city festivals, sporting events, and your own shop anniversary. Your anniversary especially is an occasion only you have.
Take the self-test: which occasions fit you?
- Do you have products that fit a season (ice cream in summer, gingerbread in Advent)?
- Are there days when your customers traditionally spend money (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Christmas)?
- Do you have slow months that need a reason to come (January, August)?
- Are there local festivals or events where your shop is in the spotlight?
- Do you celebrate a shop anniversary or a milestone birthday for your business?
The more yes answers, the more occasions you have. But: six to eight promotions per year are enough. Better a few well-planned than something half-baked every month.
Plan a promotion in four steps
1. Set the occasion and goal. What should happen: more visits on slow days, higher bills, new customers, pre-orders? One goal per promotion.
2. Determine the offer. An extra or special product instead of a percentage discount. Calculate the product cost: gingerbread with coffee costs you 30 cents but gives a reason to come.
3. Limit the timeframe. One to three days for daily occasions, one to two weeks for seasonal themes. A deadline creates decision-making.
4. Announce and remind. Signage at the register, message to lock screen one to three days before, second reminder on the day itself.
For the message text: short, concrete, with a deadline. Templates and timing rules are in the article Send push notifications to customers.
Examples: one promotion per business type
Café: "Advent calendar stamps: a special extra with your coffee every Advent week." Four weeks, four small extras, one reason to come every week.
Bakery: "Pre-order Mother's Day cake by Thursday – free rolls for breakfast included." Pre-orders help you plan production.
Barber: "January: care treatment as an extra with every cut." The slowest month gets a reason.
Ice cream shop: "Season start: your first visit brings two stamps." Brings back regular customers from last summer.
Boutique: "Loyalty weekend instead of Black Friday: triple stamps for card holders." Rewards existing customers instead of bargain hunters.
Restaurant: "Valentine's Day: reserve a table by Feb 10, complimentary aperitif." Secures your evening when everyone goes out.

Design your card to match the occasion
A digital stamp card can change its appearance to match the occasion: Halloween design in October, Christmas design in December, with a matching special reward. The customer sees the promotion every time they open their wallet – without you needing to print anything.
With stampa, holiday promotions are built in as automation. You decide which occasions fit your shop. You set the reward text. The card switches automatically on the date. Customers who have opted in to marketing get the announcement on their lock screen.
The most personal occasion: the birthday
One occasion is missing from the calendar above. It falls on a different day for each customer: their birthday. It's the strongest single promotion of the year and runs completely automatically. How to set it up is described in the article Birthday promotion for customers.
What happens if you don't change anything
Without seasonal promotions, you have no reason to contact your customers. They come when they happen to think of it – or when the competition gives them a reason. Every week without a promotion plan is a week when other shops steal your regular customers.
With an annual calendar, you know in January what you'll do in October. You're not stressed. You have time to prepare the promotion. And your customers have a reason to come right now.
Common mistakes with seasonal promotions
Too many occasions. If you run three promotions every month, you don't have a promotion anymore, you have permanent discounting. Six to eight per year are enough.
Discount instead of extra. Percentage discounts lower your price for everyone. A matching extra costs product and is experienced as a gift.
No deadline. "In December" is not a deadline. "By Sunday" is.
No announcement. The best promotion doesn't help if only the sign knows about it. The lock screen reaches people who didn't walk by this week.
Not measured. After the promotion: how many visits, how many stamps, how many redemptions compared to the previous week? Otherwise you won't know next year what to repeat.
Conclusion
Seasonal promotions aren't a creativity contest, they're a calendar. Six to eight occasions, one extra instead of a discount per occasion, a deadline, and an announcement on the lock screen. With a digital stamp card, holiday promotions run automatically. The card changes design. The message goes out without your involvement.
