Google Wallet Loyalty Card: How It Works for Android
Half your customers have Android. Without Google Wallet, you're not reaching them – yet one QR code works for both.
A Google Wallet loyalty card reaches half your customer base that doesn't have an iPhone. Android users get your rewards card the same way iPhone users do: scan QR code, tap once, done. No app, no account, no download. Here's how Google Wallet works and how your card gets there.
Why Android customers shouldn't be forgotten
Many shop owners think of wallet cards as an iPhone thing. But a large share of customers in English-speaking markets use Android. A loyalty program that only works on iPhone locks out these customers.
The good news: you don't have to do anything extra. With stampa, you create one card, and the same QR code delivers the right version to each customer. Apple Wallet card on iPhone, Google Wallet card on Android. Both show the same design, the same stamps, and the same reward.
What Google Wallet is
Google Wallet is the app where Android users store payment cards, tickets, boarding passes, and loyalty cards. It comes pre-installed on most Android devices. If not, it's free to download from the Play Store.
Important for you: this isn't an app your customer has to install just for you. It's an app they already use or can get with one tap.
Your loyalty card gets stored there as a wallet pass. For details on what a wallet pass is and how it differs from an app, see What is a wallet pass?.
How your loyalty card gets into Google Wallet
Here's the flow for your Android customer:
- Scan the QR code. The customer points their camera at the display at your register. Android recognizes the code and shows the link.
- Page in your design. A short page opens with your logo and colors. The customer can optionally enter their first name and birthday. They check a box if they want to receive offers.
- Tap "Add to Google Wallet." Google shows a preview of the card. The customer confirms, and the card lands in their wallet.
From that moment on, the card stays on their phone. It doesn't need to be reopened or refreshed.
What the Google Wallet card can do
The features match the Apple version. For you as the owner, it's one card. For the customer, it feels the same on both systems.
Stamps visible instantly. Your team scans the card with their own smartphone. The stamp appears on the card in the wallet right away.
Reward is clear. A full card shows that. You redeem the reward in the dashboard with one tap.
Notifications. Offers like "Today only: 2 for 1" or flash sales with time limits appear as wallet notifications on the lock screen. For tips on using these messages effectively, see Send push messages to customers.
Automations. Win-back campaigns for inactive customers, birthday offers, boosters for slow days, and holiday promotions work the same for Android customers as for iPhone customers.
Geofencing. When the customer is near your shop, the card reminds them. Available from the Growth plan and up.
Your branding. Logo and colors in every plan, including the free one.
Self-check: Are you reaching your Android customers?
- Have you asked customers whether your loyalty card works on Android?
- Does your team know the same QR code works for both iPhone and Android?
- Does your register display or sign show a QR code that Android customers can scan?
- Do you know how many of your active customers use Android phones?
If you answered no to more than one question, you're losing regular customers without realizing it.
Apple Wallet and Google Wallet compared
For your customers, the differences are small. Here are the key points side by side:
| Feature | Apple Wallet (iPhone) | Google Wallet (Android) |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-installed | Yes, on every iPhone | On most devices; free from Play Store if not |
| Add card | QR code, then one tap | QR code, then one tap with confirmation |
| Stamp display | On the card, instantly after scan | On the card, instantly after scan |
| Messages | Wallet notification on lock screen | Wallet notification on lock screen |
| Design | Your logo and colors | Your logo and colors |
| Effort for you | None – one card for both | None – one card for both |
The difference is mainly in display details. This doesn't affect stamps or messages. For more on the Apple side, see Loyalty card in Apple Wallet.
How it works in practice
A sandwich shop creates a card with 8 stamps. Reward: one free sandwich. A display with a QR code sits at the register. A customer with a Samsung phone scans it and gets the Google Wallet card. The customer behind them with an iPhone gets the Apple Wallet card. The team scans both cards with the same smartphone. On a slow Monday, the owner sends a message: "Today: sandwich and drink for €7.50" and reaches both groups at once.
What you should keep in mind as a shop
A few practical tips to make your start with Android customers smooth:
Show both buttons automatically. The page after the QR scan detects the device automatically. It shows the right wallet button. You don't need to configure anything.
Brief your team. Your team doesn't need to know which phone the customer has. Scanning the card is the same process on both systems.
Keep the display neutral. The print-ready display shows a QR code that works for both systems. You don't need two codes.
Data protection is handled. The privacy policy for your loyalty program is automatically created and hosted per shop. The marketing consent is a separate checkbox, off by default. It applies to Android and iPhone customers equally.
What happens if you do nothing
Without Google Wallet, you only reach iPhone customers. The other half of your customer base stands at the register and can't join in. They ask once whether it works on Android. If the answer is no, they don't ask again. You lose regular customers without noticing. Every week without a wallet card costs you revenue you can't measure.
Bottom line
With a Google Wallet loyalty card, you reach your Android customers just as easily as iPhone users: one QR code, one tap, one card. The card lives permanently on their phone and shows stamps and messages in real time. For you, that means one card for everyone, no app and no hardware. You can start stampa for free, up to 100 active customers and no credit card required. Your card works on both systems from the first moment.
